Using Documentaries to Educate Children About Alternative Energies
from:Children can be educated about the earth's energy needs in a number of ways. Class toptics, environmental workshops and other indoor activities bring the issue into the classroom. Field trips and other types of visits to centers and displays can give children an idea of what is happening in the world they live in and what they may need to do about once they are in charge.
Being aware of these issues is only half the battle, however. Children need to understand these issues and consider how they can improve the world. Since children are such "visual" creatures, the best way to approach this is through the use of documentaries.
How does one begin this process?
To face the problems we have today with the overuse of oil, children should be aware of the existence of alternative energy. Children are aware of energy in their everyday lives; they know that fuel drives cars and electricity and batteries power their games. They need to think about other kinds of energy.
Why Choose Alternative Energy?
We use oil and oil based products as the main source of power in the world. As oil prices continue to escalate, and as the public becomes more aware that this limited resource may run out, it is also becoming more aware that alternative to oil must be found.
Most people realize that there are many alternatives to oil as a source of energy that are not being used to their maximum potential. Some sources of alternative energy have actually been used before oil as a source of energy, yet they still have not found wide acceptance.
There is great potential for alternative energy sources to eventually replce oil as our primary source of power.
Why address this with children?
Children should always be encouraged to think of ways to improve their world and to be aware of ways to improve standards of living. Children should therefore be taught at an early age that many sources of energy exist, so that they can be encouraged to think about these sources as they get older.
Why develop Alternative Energy Documentaries for Children?
Through documentaries, children can more easily visualize all of the possible sources of energy that exist. This may encourage many of these children to persue careers in this field and help develop it further. Even if these children do not try to develop alternative energies as a career, lively exposure to the issue through a documentary will encourage them to look at alternative energy in their own lives.
A documentary on alternative energy is an excellent way to help children prepare for a future which may not contain oil as a source of energy. They will learn about a wider range of choices in the field of energy and also learn how to protect the environment. Results will not be instant, they will prove to be valuable in the future.
